Automotive Vapour Blasting Johannesburg — Factory-Satin Restoration Without the Risk
Automotive Vapour Blasting
Summary
VaporEdge Industries provides automotive vapour blasting in Johannesburg for engine blocks, cylinder heads, gearboxes, intake manifolds, and suspension components. Unlike dry sandblasting, our wet slurry process removes baked-on carbon, grease, and oxidation without erasing casting marks, altering critical tolerances, or embedding abrasive particles into porous aluminium. Every component is treated on an Aquablast 1215 industrial system and returned within 48 hours. Drop-off in Malvern East, JHB South.

WHY DRY BLASTING FAILS
Three Reasons Sandblasting Damages Automotive Castings
If you have ever sent an aluminium cylinder head or magnesium gearbox casing for sandblasting and received it back looking frosted, pitted, or with rounded-off casting numbers, you have seen the damage first-hand. Dry abrasive blasting works by firing high-velocity particles at a surface. On structural steel this is acceptable. On precision automotive castings it creates three specific problems:
1. Dimensional loss
The abrasive impacts remove microscopic layers of base metal. On a bearing journal or cylinder head mating surface, even 5-10 microns of material loss can affect seal fitment and compression. If you are rebuilding an engine, those microns are the difference between a seal that holds pressure and one that leaks.
2. Media implantation
When dry grit hits cast aluminium at speed, the particles fracture on impact and embed themselves into the porous metal surface. On an oil-fed component like a cylinder head or engine block, these embedded fragments can later dislodge once the engine reaches operating temperature. Thermal expansion opens the aluminium pores, releasing trapped abrasive particles directly into the engine oil. From there they travel to main bearings and cam journals, acting as grinding paste.
3. Casting mark destruction
For classic and performance restorations, original factory markings, date stamps, and casting numbers are essential for authenticity and valuation. Dry blasting rounds off these details irreversibly.

HOW VAPOUR BLASTING TOPS DRY BLASTING
Vapour blasting replaces dry kinetic impact with fluid-driven hydraulic shear. A pressurised slurry of water and fine abrasive media, typically 100-200 micron glass beads, is directed at the component surface. The water layer cushions each particle, so contamination is washed away without eroding the substrate.
1. Zero Dimensional Loss
The metal surface is cleaned, not removed. Tolerances remain within factory specification. You do not have to remachine mating surfaces after blasting.
2. Pores Closed, Not Opened
The water slurry micro-peens the surface, compressing the outer layer of the aluminium and closing microscopic pores. Vapour-blasted parts stay cleaner for years.
3. Casting Marks Survive
Raised casting numbers, manufacturer logos, and machined surfaces are preserved completely intact.

FAQ
Can you vapour blast a complete, assembled engine?
No. The engine must be fully disassembled. Blasting a complete engine forces media into internal oil galleries and crankcase areas where it cannot be fully removed. We only accept stripped components. bare blocks, loose heads, and individual manifolds.
Will vapour blasting damage my aluminium parts?
No. Vapour blasting does not remove base material. It cleans the surface layer only. Casting marks, machined surfaces, and dimensional tolerances are preserved flawlessly.
Can you remove heavy carbon buildup from combustion chambers?
Yes. The wet slurry process is highly effective at removing baked-on carbon from combustion chambers, piston crowns, and exhaust ports. In most cases a single pass is completely sufficient.
How do you prevent flash rust on steel components?
Steel parts are thoroughly rinsed, dried, and immediately treated with an ACF-50 corrosion inhibitor coat. This prevents the flash surface rust that typically develops within mere hours on raw freshly blasted steel.
Do I need to strip the component myself?
Yes. We require components to be disassembled. Separation of aluminium and steel parts, removal of rubber seals, bearings, and electrical components. These items are either damaged by the process or obstruct access to the surfaces that need cleaning.
How do I get a quote?
Use the contact form, call 062 450 2367, or email info@vaporedgeindustries.co.za with photos of your parts and a description of what you need done. We aim to respond within two hours during business hours.
